Chlorpyrifos (Dursban)

Chlorpyrifos is an organophoshate. It is registered to treat a number of pests in Australia from crop spraying, general pest treatments to termite control. The chemical disrupts the insect’s nervous system by interfering with the enzyme acetylchlolinesterase in the brain. Which is a very similar enzymes that is found in the human nervous system and can poison humans through this same mode.

Stewarts Pest Control stopped using Chlorpyifos in 1998. In 1998 all pest control operators using this chemical were required to have blood tests annually; at this same time as this was being introduced the chemical Premise arrived on the Australian market. There are a lot of health concerns with Chloroyifos in America, especially in children. Stewarts chose to stop using this chemical and use the safer alternative chemicals not only because it is safer for the operators, but also for you. A lot of pest control companies in Australia still use Chlorpyrifos and clients are attracted to using this chemical at their properties because of the price with out even knowing the health risks associated with it.

Chlorpyrifos stinks. You can smell it three houses down from the house it has been used at. This smell can be most discomforting for yourself, your neighbour and our operators. The smell can linger on for a considerable amount of time and is especially noticeable in wooden floor houses.

In America there were calls to ban the use of this chemical and since then the American EPA has phased out the use of Chlorpyifos in America. A lot of studies have been carried out in America regarding the health cfoncerns. In June 2000, the EPA administrator Carol M Browner announced that Chlorpyrifos will be eliminated form home, lawn and garden use by the end of 2000, eliminated from use in schools, day care facilities, hospital, nursing homes and malls by the end of 2000, reduced on food by the nest growing season, eliminated for controlling termites in new construction by the end of 2004 in America. The EPA stated that the main reason for the ban was to protect children from exposure to Chlorpyrifos.

If you want to know more information on Chlorpyrifos then I recommend going on the internet and researching the chemical before having it applied at your property. Please be aware that the above information are from American websites and Chlorpyrifos is not banned in Australia.
