Portuguese Millipedes Nematodes

Although in Australia some spider’s, beetles and scorpions will eat millipedes, they do not affect the numbers or have no long term affects on Portuguese millipedes. A parasitic nematode, Rhabditis necromena, has been found to have long term affects on millipedes and can reduce their numbers dramatically over a period of years.

In the late 1980’s nematodes were released in South Australia by the Department of Agriculture. The problems in many areas of South Australia have decreased.

This parasitic nematode has been found in and around the Perth metropolitan areas and it seems to have reduced the millipede population in these areas. Although they have an affect on the population, we can not bank on these nematodes completely to control the problem.

I will be continuing to research more information on this subject and will update this page accordingly.

If you would like Nematodes used at your property please contact Stewarts to find out more information and prices.
